Sound Therapy Training

Contact Kimba Arem if you are interested in personalized training/coaching for working with Sound as Medicine for personal and planetary transformation.

————————————————————————————————————————-

Live, in-person training is preferred, but can also be done via Zoom or other methods.

Mostly, over the years when I do verbal presentations, the topic has been on sound as medicine— including it’s physical, metaphysical, cosmic, and ancient lineages– as well as individual or group didjeridu making and playing workshops.

But in working with individuals or small groups, my style of sharing information is perhaps different from most formalized training programs.  I tailor the sessions to the individual or group, based on what their interests are, skill level, and how they hope to incorporate sound into their personal lives or work.  I think apprenticing rather than teaching might be a closer word to describe this approach, or the idea of entraining to the field of someone who has developed a skill or practice by employing it for many years.  Being in the field of someone can have the effect of a sort of non-verbal transmission of energy and information, in addition to the words used the time spent together. This is also true with learning the didjeridu.

I have been involved over many years as a sound therapist and as a facilitator in 9-day sound therapy immersives… and even then we just scratch the surface of this vast topic.  So I have found that with so much ground to cover and so many potential directions to go, individualizing the training is much more efficient and effective.

As far as cost, I work on a sliding scale.  My offerings are usually at $150/hr, but I would prefer that cost not be a prohibiting factor.

A DEEPER SIDE NOTE REGARDING MY GENERAL PHILOSOPHY,  INCLUDING DIDJERIDU TRAINING AS A HELPFUL ADJUNCT/GUIDE:

Since 1992, when I had a near death experience/awakening at age 21, I began following Spirit and synchronicities to guide the next steps along my path…

We live in interesting and intense times, and I feel that it is crucial for us to bring forth the gifts we carry, to uplift the frequency of our world… and sound coupled with consciousness has always been one of the key ways to do so.

I only started training/apprenticing with people over the last 10 years because people started to ask me if I did so, or would be willing to do so…

My general training philosophy is more along the lines of the ancient philosophical traditions that believe that all knowledge lies within, and a true “teacher” only guides the student to remember what is already within them.  It is like Michelangelo saying:  “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work.  It is already there, I just need to chisel away the superfluous material.”   Sound therapy, to be done in a way that truly serves, requires a lot of intuition (which seems to be a mostly lost art in the Western world) and “getting out of the way.”  In this way, “Thy will” rather than “my will” can flow through the individual and know truly how to show up for each individual– a unique, ever-changing vibratory field, a fractal of the Creator.

So that is always the basis for connecting with the people I work with, since I don’t have a formalized “program” that so many others have put together in recent years.  Besides classical piano and flute training during childhood years, everything else I have been doing has been guided by Spirit/synchronicity, which has become my best guide.
The people I generally end up working with are those who follow a similar path, collecting the breadcrumbs along the path from Spirit…not just the head leading the way, but the heart and soul… and I feel there is always a higher power that guides us– if we listen– whether it is our Spirit guides or our Higher Self or angels, power animals, etc.
Like the Akashic/Gnostic idea, I feel that so much valuable information can come to us from the inside, from our heart/soul/Spirit/Source complex, which has access to all of the information that ever was or will be– when we are ready to receive such knowledge.
That being said, learning from others or training/apprenticing I see more as a kind of mirroring or remembering.  Apparently ancient schools including those of Plato and Socrates etc. had a similar belief, harnessing the power of the group mind to re-member what we in essence already know, but lies dormant.
So this is my approach when I work with people.  I do like to ask the person or small group I am working with to think about ahead of time what they are wanting to focus on, since the world of sound as medicine is VAST.   It seems that a kind of channel opens up when I step into the role of “instructor,” and the information that the individual is seeking or ready to receive comes through. In this way it is tailored uniquely to the person in the role of “student” or “receiver.”
I know from my awakening and continued experience that we are all One, and I feel that part of the evolution/involution our species is going through is a larger collective realization of this unity.  So anything I do at this point is geared toward this end– toward transmitting this frequency and to helping others awaken to their unique vibration and their gifts– which might evolve and change in form over time– but the essence or core frequency is the same… as unique as their vocal signature or fingerprint.  Every one of us is a fractal of the creator, in the process of remembering and realizing this eternal truth.  But like snowflakes, there has never been two created exactly the same.  As we realize and emit this unique frequency– perfect as we are in our imperfections– it uplifts the entire web of life that is symbiotic and we are each a strand of.  This is the essence of what I aspire to always emanate, and assist others in doing so as well.
Those that look to be spoon-fed knowledge from a pre-set curriculum that everyone receives the same (like we are taught how to “learn” in the school systems) best learn from another method than the one I use.
I also carry a fair amount of book-knowledge as well on the topic of sound, from reading so much over the years and working with many different instructors… so that is part of the base I operate from (as a Gemini, always gobbling up information from multiple sources), but paradoxically in essence I don’t believe in the philosophy that much of the current world operates on– that we are a tabula rasa, a “blank slate,” and all knowledge comes from external sensory experiences and perceptions… rather that we are born with a unique set of skills and wisdom, including information from past or parallel lives… which we can awaken and embellish.
THE DIDJERIDU…

From my experience since 1993, I feel that incorporating the didjeridu can be a great starter tool to practice learning these principles, even if it is only used by the practitioner in their own private meditations and preparation for their work of service with sound.  I often suggest to incorporate in our time together learning didjeridu basic tone and breathing techniques– we make one out of inexpensive, nice sounding materials, that provide a great way to get the fundamental tone and to eventually perhaps learn the circular breathing practice.  Despite intense classical piano and flute training during all of childhood,  my experience of playing the didjeridu as my main instrument since 1993–  used daily, as a mediative and self-healing practice, as well as incorporated into my music and therapy work– has taught me perhaps the most, regarding the art of sound therapy.  The ancient tone, the full use of breath, the meditative posture and focused intention, helps to clear the physical, emotional, and mental channels of the true instrument– you.  It is a monochord… which is described by Socrates and Pythagoras as holding and teaching the secrets of the universe.  It entrains us to the universal Sound Current, the cosmic OM out of which all things emerge and back to which they and we ultimately return.  Playing this instrument helps stimulate the inner energy channels (nadis, chakras, meridians, shushumna, kundalini, etc.) which allows one to more easily tap into the underlying vibrational cosmic grid, and download direct guidance on how to optimally be of service, moment to moment.  Our reality is a complex and ever-new, changing one, like a river, so keeping the mind and heart open and expanded will help the practicioner to show up for each unique vibratory being in this sacred way.  Ultimately, we can learn to be a channel for our higher selves or Great Spirit… letting the universe flow through us.   This is perhaps the greatest teaching I have learning from the didjeridu.

As St. Francis said:  “Make me an instrument of Thy peace…”

I don’t feel there are any experts in sound therapy– with such a complex art, it seems that the ones who can serve others the most have done the most work to make their boundaries and sense of “self” thin enough to see the unity of all… and to let the cosmic impulse of the creator flow through them.  As I see the role of both musician and music– it is meant to be a message delivered through the messenger (the musician or therapist), but it is not the messenger’s message.  It is from the “higher” or more expanded realms.  Thus healing comes as an act of Grace, not directly from the so called “healer” or therapist, but through him or her.  That is why I will not proclaim myself as a sound “healer” when I do therapy work– my prayer is to be the messenger, and the Spirit and the soul of the individual opening to receive through the sacred chalice of the sound (created intentionally with love and compassion) guides the healing energy coming from Source.  This is ultimately, in my perception, the most empowering and effective method for all involved– used in this prayerful, sacred context.  Ancient cultures used sound and music for thousands of years primarily for building community, prayer, birthing, dying, ceremonies, healing work, and most likely was involved in building their massive megalithic structures (many of which we still cannot begin to replicate today– see Episode 5 from the series I put together, Sound of Creation: Sound and Megaliths https://www.gaia.com/video/sound-megaliths).

It is likely our ancestors did not use music only for pure entertainment.

I feel that each one of us that is called to work with sound as medicine (for it truly is a calling) can tap into this powerful field of memory of how sound and music had been used throughout time, to renew and revitalize this sacred Work– for the healing of our world.

Some reviews from former sound therapy students of Kimba:

I am forever grateful for the time I got to study with Kimba.  I am just returning from our sessions, and feel there is still much to be integrated from our time together.

I learned so much about everything; vibration, energy, sound, resonance, symbols, sacred geometry, holding and creating a sacred container with clients, ancient knowledge and SO much more.  Even when I was just in her energy my soul was learning and being activated by her dynamic presence.

Kimba is so much more than just a teacher.  She is a deeply caring and profound soul in this world, and we are so blessed to have her in it.

Thank you Kimba for our beautiful, enlightening time together.  I cannot wait until our next study sessions.  You’re an amazing light in this world, thank you for shining so brightly!

I recently made a trip to Boulder, Colorado to take a didgeridu class and receive a sound therapy treatment from Kimba; now I know first hand why she is a renowned expert and leader in her field and art.

I just started my journey a few months ago learning the didgeridu, and Kimba’s lesson was unlike any other I have ever experienced.  Though she shared practical techniques, the lesson took on more depth with discussion about our breath, history, culture, and the essence of the monochord.  Kimba’s same passion and expertise carried over into my beautiful and profound sound/vibrational treatment.  I have had many different types of sound treatments, but none that were so all encompassing, relaxing, soulful, and intentional.  I am not sure where I went during the treatment, but it was definitely not on this physical plane. Kimba truly embodies the spirit of the didgeridu and has a special gift for sound healing.  I am truly grateful for the experience, and highly recommend learning and receiving from Kimba.

We discovered Kimba through her music. We had been cultivating a yoga/meditation practice for several years and became interested in the healing effects of sound. We started searching for options on learning to use singing bowls, but having had mixed experiences with commercial schools in the past, we felt compelled to look for a true master in the field. During our search, we came across an interview with Kimba Arem. We felt immediately led to contact her, to see if she would work with us in developing our skills to play singing bowls and work with sound as a modality for both therapy and in teaching yoga.

We were thrilled to receive her reply and had a very nice chat on the phone. Although she was based in Boulder, Colorado and we lived in Florida, we felt this was an opportunity we had to pursue.

The 4 days we spent with Kimba were transformative. The focus initially was on ‘being’ the instrument, versus simply playing one. Kimba had prepared an entire presentation on both the metaphysical and quantifiable results of sound therapy as evidenced in scientific tests. Included was the power of intention and the importance of maintaining a high frequency internally.

We then moved to experiencing the sound of different instruments personally and ended with a workshop on the didgeridu.

Studying with Kimba was not a class, it was as an experience. It was an opportunity to learn from a master who has spent over 25 years dedicated to the healing effects of sound. An experience both my partner and I feel will serve us for the rest of our lives.
